BoB TRUSTEES INTRODUCTION

The change from a DAAT sponsored service user group known to all and sundry as the SUDRG to an independently registered and run charity was an enormous step for those of us employed by, and volunteering for the organisation.

This required a new level of expertise, as well as advice and guidance from people who not only understood the drug and alcohol treatment system, but more importantly believed both in the value of independent service user involvement and were willing to walk the thin SUDRG line between professionalism and a ‘seat of your pants’ instinct. Such people are not easy to find.

For those of us already involved in the building and running of the organisation it was important to find trustees that we could work with and believe in, since the structure of a charity means that we could theoretically be outvoted in our own organisation  . . . . .  not any easy thing to accept. Just as importantly they needed to be able to understand and trust in our often instinctive and idiosyncratic way of doing things. As I am sure you can imagine, it took us quite a while to find the right people.

Below are the Trustees for Build on Belief and what they have to say about themselves. BoB considers itself lucky to have such good friends and knowledgeable guides.

Jane Pettifer

TRUSTEE FOR BUILD ON BELIEF

Jane Pettifer

Jane Pettifer

I was a GP in W11 for 42 years.
During that time, I was a recognized teacher at Imperial College medical school for over a decade. I also became involved with Nottinghill Housing Trust being Chair of the local Board, then a member of the Main Board.
In general practice, I worked with the local council in my role as Chair of the Professional Executive Committee of Kensington and Chelsea Primary Care Trust.
One of my special interests was the Drug and Alcohol Service and I worked with the Heath Service, Local Authority and other Service Providers to try to maintain a committed and knowledgeable group of doctors who could offer Shared Care to their patients but also have ready access to specialized help, detox and rehabilitation. I was the lead GP for shared care services in Hammersmith, Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea.
However, I was aware of the great need for support outside the scope of the services offered in General Practice. I hope by being part of BOB I can contribute to this wider need. In the current climate of budget reduction and service cutbacks it is ever more important.
